Black History Month 2021

Letter from Panhellenic VP of Service & Philanthropy and IFC Director of Programming:

Dear Members of the Greek Community,

As you all may know, February marks Black History Month, a time of rejoicing, celebrating, and thanking the important individuals and events in the history of the African diaspora for all of their contributions and accomplishments within our society. The first week of this significant month, both Panhellenic and IFC wanted to take the time to highlight NPHC’s wonderful events that took place these past few days. We also wanted to find a way to give back, show our support, and bring awareness to the very cause!

Due to the nature of the pandemic, its effects have been felt quite powerfully within the Greater Seattle Area, especially by businesses and restaurants alike. That is why, for this month, we would like to invite you to join us in supporting our very own local Black-owned businesses! Over the next 2 weeks, both councils will be highlighting 7 businesses, 3 shops and 4 restaurants, encouraging all members to take the time to explore these new businesses, place orders or purchase gift cards, and possibly even find a new favorite place. Our goal is to recognize the contribution these shops have had on our local community and economy, as well as highlight the amazing work and stories of their fruition! As members of the UW Greek community, we have unfortunately not so positively impacted our ties and bond with the broader locale. Now is our time to reconnect, show up, and support our local community!

Beginning on 2/8, please check out our Instagram page (@uwpanhellenic & @uwifc) as both councils will be posting the 3 businesses being highlighted for this week as well as the following 4 beginning on 2/15. Every day we will do a spotlight story with words from the business owners as well as a link to their website to browse their shop, place an order, or purchase a gift card. We would very much appreciate having this event shared and promoted through your chapter’s respective parent clubs and alumni networks as well! Also, please feel free to snap a picture and tag us as we would love to share your engagement and involvement with these phenomenal places. We are both extremely delighted and excited to share with you all these amazing shops, and hope you love them just as much as we do!
