Gamma Phi Beta

Lambda chapter

The Gamma Phi Beta Sorority (ΓΦΒ) was established in 1874 with the intention to inspire the highest type of womanhood.  Today, we continue this mission, and aim to build confident women of character who celebrate sisterhood and make a difference in the world around us. We promote lifelong commitment, intellectual and personal growth and service to humanity; perpetuate our heritage as we commit to the growth of our sorority; foster enduring friendships; advocate ethical behavior, respect, authenticity, accountability, and integrity, and aspire to excellence in all that we do.

The Gamma Phi Beta (GPhi) chapter at the University of Washington is a values-centered sisterhood dedicated to building confident women of character who make a meaningful impact in the world around them. Rooted in a strong national legacy, the chapter emphasizes personal growth, leadership, and service, creating a supportive environment where members can thrive academically, socially, and professionally.

Gamma Phi Beta was nationally founded on November 11, 1874, with its UW chapter established in May 1903, making it one of the earliest sororities on campus. Known for its distinctive brown, mode, and pink colors and the pink carnation as its official flower, Gamma Phi Beta carries a rich tradition grounded in purpose and pride. Its motto, “To inspire the highest type of womanhood,” reflects the organization’s enduring commitment to excellence, integrity, and personal development.

At the heart of Gamma Phi Beta is a strong and authentic sisterhood. Members are encouraged to foster genuine relationships built on trust, respect, and shared values. The chapter promotes ethical behavior, accountability, and authenticity, while also encouraging members to pursue both intellectual and personal growth. Through sisterhood events, mentorship, and shared experiences, Gamma Phi Beta creates a community where women feel supported and empowered to become their best selves.
