Active: An initiated chapter member.
Alumna: A female member who is not affiliated with a collegiate chapter of a national sorority.
Bid: An invitation to membership.
Chapter: A chartered undergraduate or alumnae unit of a national fraternity or sorority.
COB (Continuous Open Bid): The opportunity for a chapter to invite women to membership if they did not fill quota in formal recruitment nor has not reach total. Chapters may continuous open bid and time during the school year except prior to recruitment.
Colony: Status of a new chapter prior to installation.
Dirty Recruiting: A term used to describe illegal activity by a sorority member to recruit a potential new member.
Formal Recruitment: A series of rounds hosted by sororities that are scheduled and governed by the Panhellenic Association.
Greek: A term applied to members affiliated with Greek letter organizations
Hazing: Unethical and Forbidden pre-initiation activities. This applies to both the mental and physical activities of which are banned by Ohio State, the local and state government, and the Panhellenic Association and the Interfraternity Council.
Initiation: The ceremony in which a pledged new member becomes an active member.
Interfraternity Council (IFC): The governing body of the 27 men’s chapters.
Legacy: This definition differs by chapter. The term generally refers to the daughter, granddaughter, or sister of an initiated member of a chapter.
Multi Cultural Greek Council: The governing body of 6 culturally based chapters.
NPC: National Panhellenic Conference. A conference body composed of delegates from 26 women’s social fraternities.
Panhellenic: A Greek word meaning “All Greek” and is the central governing body found on all campuses that have nationally recognized women’s social fraternities.
Pan-Hellenic Council: The governing body for the traditional African American fraternities and sororities.
Philanthropy: Active effort to promote human welfare.
New Member: A member of a women’s fraternity who is not yet an initiated member.
Recommendation: A written letter or statement recommending a potential new member for membership (generally written by an alumna of a chapter).
Recruitment Counselor: A neutral representative of Panhellenic who temporarily leaves her affiliation to guide and support potential new members through recruitment.
Recruitment: An organized activity for chapter women to meet potential new members.
Sister: A term used within women’s fraternities when referring to other members or new members.
